Answers

Question 1

  • No! Admission to Co-op Tech is based on expressed interest only! If a student meets the enrollment criteria, is 16-20 years of age, enrolled and attending a high school or GED program OR has graduated and has an original diploma, a student may enter Co-op Tech with a completed application if it contains the appropriate signatures and a seat is available. In their admissions conference with one of our career counselors we may suggest that a designated course may not be realistic for someone with a limited background in the basic skills, but providing a seat is available we will allow a student to enter the class and take the necessary steps to bring themselves up to the level they will need to reach in order to be successful in accomplishing their career goal. We do offer a limited academic intervention program to assist students in this situation.

Question 2

  • In light of the fact that each class meets for three periods a day, five days a week for either one or two years (in most cases) there is no time in a student’s day for more than one class.

Question 3

  • Co-op Tech is a Career & Technical Education Training program that is designed to provide you with the skills necessary to earn a living wage immediately upon graduation from high school. Our program operates a “School to Work” office that augments the technical training you receive at Co-op Tech with assistance in preparing a resume, interviewing techniques and other workplace skills development. Also, our Job Developer will seek industry leads and partnerships and will help students regarding employment opportunities as well as potential union apprenticeships.
  • Question 4
  • There is no tuition or formal lab fee associated with our classes because the School of Cooperative Technical Education is a part of the New York City Department of Education. However, in a number of classes there are incidental requirements such as work boots or items of a personal nature that a student will need to provide. Also, while we will provide all necessary tools, appropriate supplies and materials, students may choose to purchase their own personal set of tools and manuals or augment the amount of materials that are routinely provided by the school with those of their own.

Question 5

  • High School students receive four credits per semester at Co-op Tech. These are Career & Technical Education credits that are entered directly on a student’s high school transcript at the end of every semester. They may either be used towards an area of concentration in Career & Technical Education or they may be credited as electives towards a regular high school diploma.

Question 6

  • All students who attend Co-op Tech receive a training program designed to enable them to begin earning a living wage immediately upon graduation from High School. All students who complete our courses receive a Certificate of Completion which lists the competencies they have achieved. This, coupled with a GED or HS Diploma, has proven to be a valuable tool in landing a well paying first job.
