The uses the NATEF (National Automotive Technicians Education Foundation) General Service Technician Program curriculum, and covers one hundred percent of the NATEF task list for the program to serve as a solid base for the course of study. NATEF sets national standards for the content of instruction, which includes tasks, tools and equipment, hours and instructor qualifications. The approved curriculum covers electronic systems including ABS (braking), air bag, fuel injection and sensor theory plus analysis and testing of related onboard computer functions. The field of Automotive Maintenance and Repair has undergone a major revolution in the past two decades. Though the automobile remains a mechanical device, its function has been augmented by a host of electronic components that monitor and adjust the mechanical components of most of the vehicle’s systems. The engine, brakes, climate control, entertainment and navigation systems have all undergone electronic upgrades. As a result, today’s automobile `Mechanic’ must have
more than mechanical knowledge alone, or a combination of mechanical and basic electronic skills. Today’s automotive technician must be fully well versed in modern automotive computerized systems and computer logic troubleshooting. The fact remains that the ability to turn a wrench remains fundamental to the maintenance and repair of automobiles today. Our program includes diagnosis and repair of all components including alignment, brakes, engines, exhaust and related accessories. We are a New York State vehicle emissions and safety inspection station and we train and qualify our students to become inspectors. The instructors for the program have ASE certification for each of the courses they teach, and they continue to update their skills with professional development courses in their field.
